Introduction to classes

Soon after arrival on campus, students find themselves in a friendly environment that supports their learning of English and U.S. culture. The curriculum at Mukogawa motivates students to work with toward their personal goals and return to Japan with a sense of accomplishment. In addition to Conversation, Reading, Writing, and American Studies courses on campus, students also take Music at Holy Names Music Academy and Physical Education courses at Spokane Falls Community College. Both schools are within walking distance of MFWI.

Faculty members bring a wealth of teaching experience to the classroom. All have earned MA degrees in teaching English as a second language or in a closely related field. Nearly all have also taught English overseas. They remain active professionally by presenting at regional and national conferences. Five of the original faculty members hired in 1990 and three hired in 1991 have continued to teach at MFWI.

Innovative teaching methods, small classes of 12-14 students, and expanded access to computers promote the students’ acquisition of English and understanding of U.S. culture. Nearly 7,000 students have completed the following five academic programs:

(1) University
(2) Junior College
(3) Summer
(4) Extension
(5) Education
